• The controversy over traffic jams has not fallen since the start of the school year in Rennes.

  • This time, it is the police union Alliance which rages, estimating that the response times "have doubled or even tripled" since September.

  • In particular, he points to the city's developments in favor of soft modes of transport.

Since the beginning of September, the subject of traffic jams has not stopped talking in Rennes. This time, it is the police, who rarely speak on local issues, who have decided to put their feet in the dish. In a press release, the Alliance union is annoyed with the difficulties that the police, like all motorists, encounter to circulate in the Breton capital. And this has consequences on their missions because according to Frédéric Gallet, departmental secretary of the union, "the response times have, depending on the hours, doubled or even tripled".

The union points in particular to the improvements made by the city since the beginning of the health crisis which have reduced the place of the car in the city to promote public transport and cycling.

He cites in particular the boulevard Voltaire or the avenue Jean-Mermoz.

"These two lanes that we take several times a day to get to emergency police interventions are very busy and are arranged in such a way that no rescue vehicle can overtake and go up the lines of cars," said the press release. 'Alliance.

No "judgment on the city's development policy" but a little bit all the same

However, the union denies "passing judgment on the town's development policy". But between the lines, he does it anyway by asking elected officials that "the circulation of priority vehicles be taken into account in the development of current and future traffic lanes". "Because when we finally arrive on the scene, it is we who are taken to task by the applicants and the victims for the response time," continues the union.

In early October, Mayor Nathalie Appéré responded to criticism of traffic jams in her city and assumed her political choices in favor of soft modes.

“The difficulties, I do not deny them, they exist.

But we will not solve the problem by creating new road infrastructure, "she assured, estimating that the delivery of the second metro line, scheduled for early 2022," will be an important response to this problem.
