It is the building and environment committee in Söderhamn municipality that has made the decision regarding the fish.

The reason is that the National Food Administration has assessed that fish from Ålsjön should not be eaten due to elevated levels of PFAS.

Applies to all kinds of fish

Ålsjön includes perch and pike.

According to the Building and Environment Committee, samples were presented as early as 2019 which show that fish in Ålsjön have elevated levels of PFAS.

However, it is only now that the European Food Safety Authority, EFSA, has published new health risk-based guideline values, that an assessment has been made that local dietary recommendations are relevant.

The dietary advice applies to all kinds of fish in the lake, not just perch and pike.

Linked to the Armed Forces' use of fire foam

According to the County Administrative Board in Gävleborg, PFASEN is linked to the Armed Forces' use of fire foam at training sites in the airport area.

Sampling in streams between the airport area and Ålsjön also shows that there is a continuous spread of PFAS from the area to the lake.

At present, it cannot be ruled out that other sources may also contribute to elevated levels of PFAS in the area, according to the County Administrative Board.
