India has offered corona vaccines to African countries where the Omicron variant has occurred.

These could be provided either through the UN vaccination program Covax or bilaterally, the Indian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday evening.

The government has also approved previous orders for the India-made AstraZeneca vaccine Covishield from Malawi, Ethiopia, Zambia, Mozambique, Guinea and Lesotho, it said.

India is also ready to supply medicines, test kits, protective suits and ventilators.

Competition for influence in Africa

Shortly before that, China had promised Africa a billion doses of vaccine.

The two most populous countries in the world want to increase their influence on the continent.

India had already sent millions of vaccine doses at the beginning of the year, even before many other countries did.

Then the government stopped exports in the face of a violent wave in their own country in the spring in connection with the Delta variant.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, India had so far sent more than 25 million cans to 41 African countries.

In the meantime, the corona numbers in India have been relatively low for months, even if many people no longer adhere to the corona rules.

Studies show that antibodies are widespread in the population: both because of the vaccination and because of an infection.
