Revealing the secret of choosing to name a mutant "Omicron" and its relationship to the name of the Chinese President

Greek letters nu, shi, omicron, pi.

The new mutant of Corona caused the ban on travel to and from several countries, the decline in global markets and the price of oil, and hopes for the fight against the coronavirus dwindled, and a new term entered the nomenclature of the mutant, which is “Omicron”.

The American newspaper "New York Times" mentioned the origin of this name, and how the World Health Organization chose it.

The new mutant, which appeared in South Africa, was named after the fifteenth letter of the Greek alphabet.

The newspaper quotes the World Health Organization and experts as saying that the naming system, which the organization announced last May, makes public communication between people about mutants "easier and less confusing."

For example, the mutant that appeared in India is not widely known as B.1.617.2. Instead, it is known as delta, which is the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet.

There are now seven "of interest" or "of concern", each with a Greek letter, according to the World Health Organization.

Some other mutagens with Greek letters do not reach these levels of classification.

The newspaper pointed out that the organization "skips two characters" before Omicron, "Nu" and "Xi", leading to speculation about whether the letter "Xi" was skipped out of respect for Chinese President Xi Jinping, Xi Jinping.

It is easy to confuse Nu with the word "Nu" in English, said WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic, and Xi was not used because it is a common name.

He added that the organization "follows best practices for naming diseases, and avoids offending any culture, society, country, region, or any groups or ethnicities."

The organization relied on a "simple and easy" naming system, unlike the scientific names of mutant, in order to avoid any errors or difficulties in pronunciation.

While the discovery of the new mutant of the Corona virus, in South Africa, caused great panic among many, laboratories set out on a renewed journey to besiege it and try to find out the effectiveness of the available vaccines against it.
