The WHO commented on this over the weekend. Sure, it had to be a letter from the Greek alphabet. Before Omikron it would have been the turn of the letters Ny and Xi, but Ny sounds too much like "new" and was therefore misleading, they say, and "Xi" was not used because it was a common surname the German press agency, which adds that there is even a very prominent name bearer in the form of the Chinese head of state Xi Jinping.
So, that was the section on getting smarter, now into the hard reality: The newly discovered coronavirus variant, Omikron, has reached Hessen.
The suspicion was confirmed on Sunday in the case of someone who had already come by plane from South Africa on November 21.
The infected person was fully vaccinated, developed symptoms during the week and had himself tested. According to the Hessian Ministry of Health, he is in domestic isolation.
The good news for the whole malaise:
Since the new coronavirus variant became known, the Frankfurt Health Department has been testing all travelers from South Africa and Namibia immediately after they have arrived at the airport, so far no one has been positive.
Who knows what happens next, the incidence figures are still only worries.
In any case, the citizens of the region are behaving wisely: they get booster vaccinations wherever possible and they buy their gifts early.
