Moose flies, or deer lice flies as they are actually called, live mainly on moose, but also on other ungulates such as reindeer or deer.

In the autumn, they swarm in the forest to find a host animal to settle on and then it happens that they also jump on humans.

- When we pick mushrooms or move in the forest in different ways, they may think it is a moose they have found, says Jonas Malmsten veterinarian at the Department of Game, Fish and Environment at SLU in Umeå.

It is difficult to get rid of moose flies.

They have a soft skeleton so it is not possible to squeeze them, for example.
