It was until 2019 “the” festival of Chinese-speaking cinema.

The Golden Horse brings together Chinese, Hong Kong and of course Taiwanese filmmakers in Taipei.

But this faltered in 2018 after Taiwanese director Fu Yu spoke: “

I really hope that one day our country can be considered a completely independent entity.

 "

A cinema that escapes Beijing's censorship

The sentence enraged Beijing, which refuses to recognize Taiwan's independence.

Result: this year and for the third consecutive edition, hardly any Chinese film takes part in the competition.

But the crisis has pushed the festival to reinvent itself to gradually become the showcase of a cinema that escapes the censorship of Beijing.

Symbolic, a documentary devoted

to the demonstrations in Hong Kong

is also nominated in the category of best documentary film.

A film obviously censored in China as in Hong Kong.
