An e-scooter driver had a fatal accident in Mainz.

The Allgemeine Zeitung reports.

According to the police, the man of unknown age was driving the electric vehicle on Schillerstrasse in the direction of Gautor in the afternoon when he was hit by a bus from behind and rolled over.

The rescue workers had to lift the bus to retrieve the man, but could only determine that he was dead.

His identity has not yet been established beyond doubt.

The 22-year-old bus driver and several eyewitnesses suffered a shock.

They were looked after by pastors.

Because there were many passers-by at the scene of the accident, rescue workers set up mobile privacy screens.

Experts were on site to reconstruct the course of the accident.

The police have started an investigation.

Witnesses who can provide information about the accident are asked to report to the police on 06131 654110.

E-scooters have been licensed without a license in German road traffic since 2019.

According to the ADAC, five e-scooter drivers died in road traffic in Germany last year, and more than 2000 were injured.

In almost three out of four accidents with personal injury (around 72 percent), the e-scooter driver was primarily responsible.
