The regional chamber of agriculture of Brittany, the leading breeding region in France, is worried about the future of these productions, in particular because of the “economic and moral wear and tear” of farmers.

"The temptation to stop breeding is no longer taboo", write the Presidents of the Chamber in a long open letter made public on Friday and addressed in particular to the Minister of Agriculture and elected officials in the region.

"The income from livestock is still struggling and lower than the income from plant sectors," notes the Chamber, which sees "creeping greening" emerging.

Clearly, animal production no longer remunerating enough, breeding begins to be replaced by cereals, more remunerative.

The authors of the letter see a decrease in the number of cattle in 2021, and "the trend seems to be accelerating."

The pork sector is facing “a surge in raw materials”.

In poultry, they deplore an "unacceptable importation by our catering out of French domicile".

The transmission of the holdings in question

"Faced with this economic and moral wear and tear of producers", the renewal of the generations "could be confronted with the rebellion of the new generation, and the absence of willingness to pay could lead to the absence of consent to produce", write the representatives of farmers.

Half of the farms are due to change hands within the next 10 years.

“The breeders aspire to a vision and consistency between public policies and sector policies, between issues of food sovereignty, climate and environmental issues!

», They continue, raising in particular the questions of food sovereignty as energies resulting from agriculture.

How to "make your own butter"?

“Do public policies in favor of the production of renewable energies represent a risk for the food vocation of livestock? Do they run the risk of insidiously transforming fodder land into biomass surface for energy? To "make your own butter", will it be better to be an energy farmer than a breeder? “, Ask the authors of this letter. Coming back to the greenhouse gases emitted by breeding, they ask: “in Brittany do we want the carbon neutrality of Breton breeding, without cows in the fields, without ham, without regional chicken in our canteens? ".

Breeding deserves "to be better known and understood in its economic role in the territories, including in its media treatment (...) It is now that the hope of a rebound must be given to breeders: a political hope , an economic hope, a social and societal hope for the younger generations ”, they conclude.

Nationally, Brittany supplies 57% of pigs, a third of broilers, 45% of eggs and 20% of milk.

This production makes the food industry one of the main job providers in Brittany.
