The burial ceremonies of the three French climbers who died in an avalanche in Nepal at the end of October will take place in France on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, announced Thursday evening the Excellence Group of National Mountaineering (GEAN).

“The bodies of Thomas, Gabriel and Louis were repatriated to France.

They will rest near their loved ones, in Nice, in Briançonnais and Chambéry, near their favorite mountains, ”writes GEAN, of which the three victims were members, in a post on Facebook, relayed by

.

“We would like to thank from the bottom of our hearts all the people who made this possible (Nepalese and French rescuers, the French and Nepalese government, the French Federation of Alpine and Mountain Clubs…) As well as all the people who supported us, us and their families in these difficult times, ”he adds, before detailing the dates and places of the three burial ceremonies.

Found on November 8

Louis Pachoud, Gabriel Miloche and Thomas Arfi, aged 27 to 34, disappeared on October 26 following an avalanche during their ascent of the west face of Mingbo Eiger, which rises to an altitude of 6,070 meters.

Initial reconnaissance had made it possible to locate their tracks up to an altitude of 5,900 m, while they had apparently turned around a hundred meters before the summit.

The bodies of the three men, members of GEAN, the elite formation of the French Federation of Alpine and Mountain Clubs (FFCAM), were found on November 8 in the avalanche zone by a Nepalese rescue team.

A French team of 14 people made up of gendarmes, experts and an avalanche dog had just been dispatched to participate in the search.

September-November, the most dangerous season

The three climbers were part of a team that arrived at the end of September, in the Khumbu and Everest region, with the aim of climbing various peaks culminating at 5,000 and 6,000 m, south of Ama Dablam (6,814 m).

The Himalayas attract athletes from all over the world, most of them during the spring, a period of good weather from the end of April to the end of May.

According to experts, the September-November season is more dangerous due to high winds and lower temperatures, and at this time the highest mountains in the world usually only see a small number of climbers risking the climb.
