The resigned Swedish prime minister stayed in power for 7 hours

It looked as if the new era had begun in Sweden last Wednesday, when Magdalena Andersson, 54, the leader of the center-left Social Democratic Party, became the country's first female prime minister, lasting just seven hours.

Anderson submitted her resignation after a defeat in Parliament over the budget. But after its budget was rejected in favor of those put forward by the opposition, which includes the far-right Swedish Democratic Party, and frustrated with this reality, the Green Party withdrew from the coalition government.

The resignation of the prime minister has left Sweden in a state of political limbo. The political scene in this country was in a tense state as a result of the fragile government coalition, and the vote of no confidence, last June, against former Prime Minister Stephen Lofven led to his exit from the government, and Anderson succeeded him as leader of the Social Democratic Party. At one point, Sweden accepted more refugees than any other European country. But its image as a progressive country has finally been eroded by the rise of the right and the rising populist sentiment, led by the Swedish Democratic Party. The political spectrum shifted to the right, as anti-refugee and anti-European sentiment grew.

Anderson announced, in a statement published on "Facebook", that she became the new prime minister at ten in the morning local time last Wednesday.

But by 4:30 of the same day, she published another statement on Facebook, announcing her resignation.

"Given constitutional practices, the government coalition must resign if one of the parties leaves the government," she said in the statement.

For me, it is a matter of respect, as I do not want to lead a government whose legitimacy has been called into question.”

Green Party spokesman Per Poland said his party left the government because parliament approved a government budget put forward by the Swedish Democratic Party.

This neo-Nazi party, known for its anti-immigrant policy, has seen a surge in popularity over the past few years.

Until a new government is elected, the current government will continue to handle government business.

Anderson, who has served as finance minister since 2014, said she was still ready to serve as prime minister, but in a one-party government.
