"They discussed common concerns about the ongoing hostilities of Russia near the border with Ukraine and its harsh rhetoric against Ukraine," the White House press service said.

The sides agreed that all participants should continue diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

Earlier, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Karen Donfried said that at a meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Riga, the United States intends to discuss steps towards Russia due to the allegedly unusual military activity of the Russian side near Ukraine.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the foreign ministers of the alliance countries intend to discuss in Riga the "concentration of Russian forces" near the border of Ukraine.
