A COVID-19 mutant virus that appears to be more potent than the delta mutation has been reported in South Africa.

The new mutation was identified as carrying 32 gene mutations in the spike protein, which plays a key role in penetrating cells.

The delta mutation had 16 spike protein gene mutations.

As a result, there is growing concern that the new mutation is more contagious than the delta mutation and may invalidate the effectiveness of the vaccine.

The UK immediately suspended flights to six African countries, including South Africa and Botswana.

Singapore also decided to ban entry of people from seven African countries, including South Africa, from 11:59 p.m. tomorrow (27th).
