In Wiesbaden, traffic lights will in future be digitally controlled for better traffic flow and cleaner air.

The city officially put the "Digi-V" traffic control system into operation on Thursday.

The system collects and analyzes traffic and environmental data in order to be able to react better to the traffic situation and compliance with the limit values for air pollutants.

Among other things, cameras were installed with which the traffic flows are recorded.

They cannot recognize license plates or faces, but they are able to differentiate between vehicle types and also to detect cyclists or pedestrians.

Avoid a diesel driving ban

A total of around 220 traffic lights were converted in Wiesbaden, many of them with environmental or weather sensors.

The upgraded traffic lights are connected to a central computer.

With the help of artificial intelligence, the traffic light phases should be optimally controlled.

There are also dynamic traffic signs with route recommendations.

The Digi-V project is part of the city of Wiesbaden's immediate program, with the help of which a diesel driving ban is to be averted.

The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure with 15 million euros - that is half of the total cost.
