The area below eastern Malmberget, where LKAB sought a prior notice to build 1,000 homes, is according to the municipal council still relevant but not in the size proposed by LKAB.

- We sit with LKAB and look at where we should place the contractor housing and various sites, says municipal councilor Henrik Ölvebo (MP).

He sees that there is an urgency in finding more housing for contractors, partly because LKAB will start renovating its three pellet plants in the Vitåfors mine.

Also wants to build 200 rental homes

On the other hand, Henrik Ölvebo believes that just because the municipality said no to the advance notice, it does not have to mean that it will take time if it is possible to place them on already detailed land.

In addition to building contractor housing, LKAB also plans to expand its rental portfolio in the area.

The company has previously stated that they are ready to build approximately 200 homes in Gällivare municipality.

- We have given them a proposal where they can build the homes where there are ready-made detailed plans, something that LKAB will now take a position on, says Henrik Ölvebo.

"Need to ensure that the market builds"

The idea is that the 200 homes to be built will go to LKAB Fastigheter's, formerly FAB, housing queue.

- The municipal housing company, Top bostäder, can not build everything.

We need more people building housing so that LKAB chooses to build is more than welcome.

Then we need to ensure that the market also builds, says Henrik Ölvebo.

The ore fields founded by contractors

Malmberget was founded at the end of the 19th century when people from different parts of the country chose to settle down to work in the mine.

During the early 20th century, LKAB began building homes for its workers who worked in Malmberget's mines.

Today, temporary labor, so-called fly in fly out staff, has become more common.
