Abi Ahmed joins Ethiopian forces on the front lines

An Ethiopian government spokesperson said that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has been on the front lines with government forces since Tuesday.

It is noteworthy that Abi Ahmed is the supreme commander of the Ethiopian armed forces, as the head of government.

Today, Wednesday, the Ethiopian Minister of Information said that Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen is responsible for the day-to-day running of the government.

Ethiopia, with its multiple ethnicities, is at risk from the year-long conflict between the central government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front.

The front controlled the reins of affairs in Ethiopia for twenty-five years before joining the ranks of the opposition after the election of Abiy Ahmed as prime minister in 2018, and then strengthened its bases in the Tigray region, in the north of the country.

Last year's conflict between Addis Ababa and the Tigray People's Liberation Front over the postponement of national elections due to the coronavirus pandemic led to the ongoing violence.

Against the wishes of the national government, Tigray held regional elections, sparking ongoing clashes since November 2020.
