November 23, 2021 "Few women report, but we have managed to improve the situation over time. The cultural profile has a heavy impact. We must help women defend themselves, we must accompany them on this path and to do this we must work in synergy." the head of the Anti-Crime Department (Dac) of the police, prefect Francesco Messina, at the presentation in Catania of the "This year is love" campaign in which, among others, the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese, and the head of the police, Lamberto Giannini.

"All security actors, private and public, in this area - added Messina - must work together. Not only the police, the judiciary, lawyers, anti-violence centers, doctors, training: all together to achieve the result of beating the phenomenon and then thinking about its eradication ".

The data

89 women are victims of gender crimes every day in Italy, and in 62% of cases they are mistreated in the family. A slight decrease was generally recorded in the trend of murders of women compared to homicides: if in the period January-August 2020 the women victims of femicide were 48% of all those killed, in the same period of 2021 the index falls at 41%. In 72% of cases the perpetrator is the husband or ex-husband; in 1 out of 2 cases he used a stabbing weapon; 70% of the victims were Italian. The figure for women leaving small children rises: in January-August 2020 it was 25%, while in the same period of 2021 it was 31%; it is 40% with the data collected before the publication of the brochure created for the initiative. The highest rate of women who turn to the police for warning requests is recorded in the southern regions, especially in Sicily. And precisely for this reason, from Catania, a city shaken in the recent past by some serious episodes of femicide, the police underline, "it is necessary to say enough".

"Recidivism increases in family cases"

The highest number of warnings for persecutory acts against women is recorded in the south, that of warnings for domestic violence, on the other hand, in the regions of northern Italy. The number of relapses in cases of domestic violence increases slightly: the subjects reported after the imposition of the warning go from 7% to 9%; on the other hand, relapses due to persecutory acts decreased significantly: from 11% to 6%. In 49% of cases the subjects admonished, both for stalking and for domestic violence, live or have lived with the victim.

On the front of the prevention of violence against women, the most effective measure continues to be the warning of the Quaestor. For the prefect Francesco Messina "the challenge against femicide is played exclusively in the field of prevention". However, a hand is also offered to ill-treating men, to those who engage in violence without yet leading to a more serious crime that requires the intervention of the judicial police. The Police, thanks to the Zeus protocol, also indicates to men a useful path to get out of the cycle of violence, a way to manage their anger. In a historical period characterized by emergencies that have marked the history of the whole world, the Police has adapted its operational approach by updating it with new technological tools, such as the You Pol app, which however does not replace - for serious cases - the call to the Single European Emergency Number "112" and / or 113, especially in cases of imminent danger. 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, this number is always active, but You Pol can help victims and witnesses of domestic violence to ask for help.
