November 23, 2021A 2,000-year-old silver coin was accidentally recently discovered by an Israeli girl on an excursion to the City of David archaeological park in Jerusalem.

This was announced by the Israeli Archaeological Authority.

According to the researchers, the coin is considered particularly rare for two reasons. The first concerns the archaic Hebrew writings that appear there. On one side it is written 'Second year': it means that it was coined during the second year of the war against the Romans, sometimes also called the Great Revolt, around 67-68 AD. On the other one reads "Jerusalem the Holy" which , together with the high quality of the silver the coin was made from, which weighs 14 grams, indicates that it may have been minted by a priest using the metal from the Temple's silver reserves.

The second reason concerns the material used, namely pure silver.

"Of the many thousands of coins from that era found so far - explains Dr. Robert Kool, head of the Numismatics Department of the Israeli Archaeological Authority - only 30 dating back to the years of the Great Uprising are made of silver".
