The family counseling at Uppsala municipality has periodically been delayed with long waiting times before a couple who needs help with their relationship in a series of conversations can have a first meeting.

Periodically, waiting times have been shortened.

But now the development has been heading in the wrong direction for several months now.

- The queue began to get longer after the summer, says Ann-Christine Dahlén, head of department at the social services.

Offered slimmed down version

The couple who are currently turning to the municipality for help may start family counseling in April.

In an attempt to mitigate the effects, the municipality has launched a kind of slimmed-down model: One call at a time, ESIT.

Such a call can be made within a few weeks, but does not constitute the same coherent treatment as ordinary family counseling.

- It is clear that this can have consequences where the problems in a relationship escalate, says Ann-Christine Dahlén.

Politicians push for money?

The social services themselves admit that family counseling needs to be strengthened with staff.

The question is how responsible politicians stand to allocate more money.

- I think we will have to look at this next year, says Asal Gohari (S), chairman of the social committee.
