Several dozen candidates of all stripes running for the Libyan presidency

The High Electoral Commission (HNEC) announced on Monday evening the end of the deadline for submitting candidatures for the presidential election of December 24.
The press conference which was to take place today has been postponed until tomorrow "
because of the large attendance
" according to the commission.

About ten applications were submitted today.
Nearly 80 candidates finally stood for the presidential election on December 24, but the acceptance of their files is not final;
it is only at its first stage.
The files will be transferred to the Attorney General of Tripoli for examination before the final decision.
The candidates come from all sides.
Saif al-Islam
, the youngest son of Colonel Gaddafi,
Marshal Khalifa Haftar
, the strongman of eastern Libya and
Prime Minister Abdelhamid Dbeibah
are at the head of the peloton.
But the candidacy of these three leaders is already controversial with part of the population.
Some consider Saif al-Islam and Haftar to be “
war criminals
”.
As for the Prime Minister, many believe that he does not have the right to stand in view of the electoral law and because of his commitment not to compete in the Geneva political agreement, there are close to a year.
If their candidacy, like that of Aguila Saleh, head of Parliament, is not a surprise to anyone, that of Bachir Saleh, the former private secretary of Colonel Gaddafi, created the surprise.
He returned from exile last week.
Among the well-known candidates are also the former head of government Ali Zaïdan and the former Minister of Oil Ali al-Issaoui.
Also on the list of contenders for former diplomats, political party leaders, civil society and human rights activists, one actor and one woman: Layla Ben Khalifa, human rights activist. man and leader of the Libyan National Movement.
It is now up to the courts to examine the files to validate them or not before December 6.
