The police confirmed tonight that several people died and more than twenty were injured in the attack perpetrated this afternoon in the town of
Waukesha
, in Wisconsin (USA), where
a car slammed into the participants
in a parade and ran over many of them .
The police chief,
Dan Phillips, confirmed that several of those hit in this incident were children
and also announced that there were "several" deaths, although he did not want to give more details because, as he explained, they are notifying the victims' families of the deaths.
The police confirmed that there is
a person detained
but did not give further details because the investigation is still open.
Phillips and the mayor of the city,
Shawn Reilly,
had previously appeared
before the media to confirm the number of injured, as well as that a suspect is being searched, and they assured that
there are no more threats
and the area in which the event occurred is secured.
The police chief also said that
the vehicle with which this attack was perpetrated
, a red SUV,
has been recovered
.
Neither the mayor nor the police chief wanted to give more details of this "chaotic and tragic incident", as defined by Phillips, which occurred at 4:39 p.m. local time (22,39 GMT), when the aforementioned
vehicle lunged at the participants
in this parade with which the town opened the holiday season.
