One dead and 3 wounded in an attack by a Palestinian in the Old City of Jerusalem

The Israeli authorities announced the killing of one person and wounding three others on Sunday morning in a rare firearm attack by a Palestinian from the Hamas movement in the Old City of East Jerusalem.

"At around 09.00 (07:00 GMT), a gunman opened fire in the Old City of Jerusalem, seriously injuring two civilians and two policemen," the Israeli police said.

An AFP journalist at the scene heard gunfire and screaming.

Shortly after that, the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, where the wounded were taken, announced that a young man, Eliyahu Kay, 25, a new immigrant from South Africa, died of his wounds.

Kai was killed "on his way to work".

After this rare gun attack in the Old City of East Jerusalem, a large number of policemen were deployed, while the body of the attacker lay on the ground for a long time before the police confirmed his death.
