20 November 2021 The Italian Coast Guard was engaged throughout the day in two complex rescue operations for migrants. In total, more than 420 people were rescued at sea and taken to Lampedusa and Porto Empedocle.

A few hours ago the intervention of a SAR patrol boat of the Coast Guard in favor of a boat in difficulty with 70 migrants on board. All were rescued and taken safely to

Lampedusa

. They are not missing.

In the second operation, the Coast Guard ship Dattilo with more than 350 migrants is heading to

Porto Empedocle

. Last night the Dattilo ship was in fact engaged in an emergency intervention, which lasted several hours, in favor of a fishing boat that was more than 70 miles from the Sicilian coast, in the Italian SAR area of responsibility. The boat was in danger due to the poor marine weather conditions and the large number of people on board.

The National Operations Center of the Coast Guard, having received the report, sent the Dattilo ship and the Coast Guard patrol boats to the spot. The migrants, including more than 40 minors, were rescued aboard the SAR patrol boats of the Coast Guard and subsequently transshipped to the Dattilo ship.

Under the coordination of the Italian Coast Guard, a Coast Guard ATR42 aircraft, a Frontex aircraft as well as four merchant ships present in the area contributed to the rescue operations, which - given the difficult marine weather conditions in the area - were used to mitigate the impact of wind on operations, thus facilitating the safe transshipment of migrants in distress.
