November 19, 2021 The contagion situation in Austria risks getting out of control and it is for this reason that the government has decided to make the vaccine mandatory and to put the country in lockdown. In fact, since Monday a general lockdown has been triggered for the entire population and not just for the unvaccinated. The weekly incidence per 100,000 inhabitants in Salzburg was 1672 yesterday and 1557 in Upper Austria. "We no longer have much room for maneuver," said the governor of Upper Austria Thomas Stelzer. The lockdown - he said - will last "a few weeks" and was necessary to allow the hospitals to operate.

The general lockdown will last 20 days and then continue for the unvaccinated. This was announced in the morning by the government which also established that from 1 February 2022 the vaccination obligation will be imposed on people who by that day have not received any dose of the vaccine against Covid-19. This was announced by the Austrian Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg (OeVP) speaking from Innsbruck to the entire nation. Austria becomes the first EU country to impose the vaccine.

The governor of the Land Tyrol Guenther Platter announced that "the vaccination obligation will start from 1 February: only in this way will we get out of the vicious circle".

"Despite months of effort, we have not been able to get enough people to get vaccinated," Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg regretted.

"There are too many political forces that go against us", he added, speaking of an "attack on the health system".
