A work by Russian painter Alexej von Jawlensky is auctioned this Friday in Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques).

The painting had been discovered at a family in Bayonne who did not know its value, reports France Bleu Pays basque.

It is in fact estimated at at least 200,000 euros.

The Jew in Prayer

, painted in 1893, had been bought by a Polish collector who later settled on the Basque Coast.

It was his descendants who decided to have the painting and other objects valued during the sale of the family house.

“When entering the dining room, there were a large number of paintings on the wall, including this portrait.

Immediately, I tell myself that this is not an insignificant picture ”, explains to our colleagues Arnaud Lelièvre, auctioneer at Côte Basque Enchères.

A painter listed on the art market

After several months of investigation, the canvas was finally authenticated.

Alexej von Jawlensky is a highly rated artist in the market.

The expressionist painter was a close friend of Vassily Kandinsky and dancer Alexandre Sakharoff.

The Jew in Prayer

, sold from 2 p.m., could fly to 300,000 euros, estimates the auctioneer.

“The work has two dimensions: the financial value and a sentimental value, that is to say here the value of what it can represent in a family a work which has crossed generations, indicates Arnaud Lelièvre.

It's an incredible pedigree.
