Stefan Fors, epidemiologist in the Stockholm Region and is worried.

The vaccination rate has decreased since October and currently about 85 percent of the country's population is vaccinated with two doses.

Over 1.2 million of all Swedes have not taken any vaccine dose at all.

- There is still a lot of potential for death and misery in this pandemic, says Fors to SVT.

At least 2,200 on iva

If the willingness to vaccinate does not increase - in combination with the spread of infection gaining momentum, 5,400 people risk dying in Sweden before the summer.

This is shown by Regions Stockholm's calculations for the worst case scenario.

The calculations also show 21,650 cases of illness, of which at least 2,200 people must receive intensive care.

Compare with Portugal

But many of the deaths can be avoided if more people get vaccinated.

Stefan Fors compares with Portugal, which has higher vaccination coverage than Sweden, where 87 percent are vaccinated.

- If we were to achieve that in Sweden, we would be able to avoid four-fifths of the deaths we had counted on.
