Accusing Minsk of seeking to "divert attention" from violations of international law and human rights, the major powers of the G7 called on Thursday, Belarus to end "immediately" the current migration crisis on the borders of the G7. 'EU.

In a statement, the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom (which holds the rotating presidency of the G7), France, the United States, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan and the European Union "Condemn the orchestration by the Belarusian regime of illegal immigration across its borders".

Humanitarian aid delivery

"We call on the regime to immediately cease its aggressive and exploitative campaign in order to avoid further death and further suffering," they say.

"The actions of the Belarusian regime constitute an attempt to distract attention from its continued disregard for international law, fundamental freedoms and human rights, including those of its own people," they write.

The G7 countries call on Minsk to grant international organizations "immediate and unhindered access to deliver humanitarian aid".

They express their "solidarity" with Poland, Lithuania and Latvia, victims according to them "of a provocative use of illegal immigration".

Response to Western Sanctions

A few thousand migrants, mostly from the Middle East, have been camping for days in freezing temperatures along the Polish border on the Belarus side in the hope of being able to enter the EU.

The West accuses Minsk of having orchestrated this influx since the summer, in response to Western sanctions against Belarus after the repression in 2020 of a historic opposition movement.

Warsaw, as well as the two other European neighbors of Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia, refuse to accept these thousands of migrants.
