• Brazil How Spain finances deforestation in the Amazon

Brazil

has just added a new record for the destruction of the

Amazon

.

According to official data, between August 2020 and July 2021, 13,235 square kilometers of forest were lost.

It is the equivalent of

22 times the city of Madrid

and represents an increase of 22% compared to the previous period.

The data are from

the National Institute for Space Research (INPE)

of the Brazilian Government itself.

The satellites of the Prodes system capture images throughout this period to cover the rainy and dry seasons and have the most faithful possible panorama of reality.

So far, the highest figure was in 2008, when 12,911 square kilometers of plant area were destroyed.

The specialists coincide in stating that behind these numbers is the lack of control of environmental crimes, with the technical bodies of

the Brazilian Environment Institute (Ibama)

that act on the ground completely dehydrated.

The government also contributes to the feeling of impunity for offenders with the public statements of President

Jair Bolsonaro

denying the problem and encouraging the legalization of hitherto irregular activities, such as mining within indigenous territories.

The main deforestation factor is the pressure from agriculture and livestock, the opening of land for soybeans and Brazilian beef, which in most cases reaches Europe and other regions without problems, despite their irregular origin.

For environmentalists, the record number is no surprise: "The result is the result of a persistent, planned and continuous effort to destroy environmental protection policies in the Jair Bolsonaro regime," said

Marcio Astrini

, executive secretary,

in a statement.

of

the Climate Observatory

, a coalition that brings together dozens of environmental organizations, such as WWF and Greenpeace.

"It is the triumph of a cruel project that leads the world's largest rainforest to disappear before our eyes and turns Bolsonaro's Brazil into a global climate threat," he lamented.

THE GOVERNMENT DENIES THE PROBLEM

Meanwhile, the Government remains installed in denialism.

This same week, during a meeting with investors in

Dubai

, Bolsonaro affirmed that the Amazon "is a paradise" and that it is "exactly the same" as when Brazil was discovered in 1500.

The reality of the figures contrasts with the showy promises made by Brazil at

COP-26

, an appointment that Bolsonaro did not attend.

The Government announced its commitment to end illegal deforestation in 2028, two years than initially planned, a totally unaffordable promise if the current rate is maintained.
