The

Basque Government

intends to

paralyze the holding of mass events

organized by municipalities and in which

prevention measures

against Covid are not respected, such as wearing a

mask and avoiding contact

. The

"worrying speed" of the infections

that has occurred in the last month not only forces the Basque Country to take a step back in the weeks leading up to Christmas but to take a

180 degree turn

in its statements because the Executive of Urkullu Tomorrow, he will ask the Basque judges for authorization to

use the Covid-19 passport

in cultural events and in the hospitality industry as a barrier to those who have not yet been vaccinated.

The Basque Country has seen its infections increase from

59 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on October 7 to more than 181 registered yesterday Monday

. A sustained growth of the positives that has not yet stressed its hospital system in which 144 people are admitted. But the threat of a sixth wave as the Christmas dates approach has pushed Lehendakari Urkullu and his Health Minister

Gotzone Sagardui

to adopt new restrictions and radically change their position regarding the role of judges.

The new measures that will come into force as of tomorrow, Wednesday, will affect all municipalities with an incidence rate higher than 150 cases. In the latest information provided yesterday,

eight municipalities already exceeded 400 cases

and there are several dozen localities, including San Sebastián, which already exceed the

150 cases now established as a limit

. A list that will be updated twice a week when the Basque Health Service had decided to provide data on infections only once a week after overcoming the fifth wave and achieving

complete vaccination of 90% of those over 12 years of age.

The Basque Government requires in the order that the municipalities suspend or at least postpone those events outdoors or indoors in which compliance with prevention measures is not ensured, although it cannot intervene in events such as the

demonstration called by EH Bildu

that is held will be held next Saturday in Bilbao as it is a fundamental right.

When it is guaranteed that wearing the mask will be respected and maintaining the required distance, the Basque Government expands the

prevention measures with

entry and exit

security corridors

, limited areas to drink and eat and more space between attendees.

In any case, Basque health claims that these events, if possible, take place abroad.

But the control measures can go further if the Superior Court of Justice of the Basque Country (TSJPV) authorizes the Basque Government to use the

Covid-19 passport as a requirement for access to cultural events and hospitality venues

. Until today, the Basque Government had been critical of the use of this document as a filter to prevent access by unvaccinated people and, yesterday, the Lehendakari Iñigo Urkullu transferred to the

Government of Sánchez the responsibility of "unifying" the application of this measure

.

Just 24 hours later, the counselor Sagardui has corrected the lehendakari by announcing that the Chamber chaired by Judge

Luis Garrido will

be asked to apply

this requirement by providing data on the incidence of infections and their relationship with unvaccinated people. According to the latest data from the Basque Government,

one in five young people between 20 and 29 years old is not immunized

, 17% of those in their thirties are not

immunized

, and the unvaccinated population drops to 13% among young people between 16 and 19 years old. As in the rest of Spain, children under the age of 12 have not received any vaccine and have involuntarily become transmitters of the virus

. Neither do 100% of Basque health personnel

has received the two doses of vaccination, as recognized by Sagardui who has encouraged the entire population to go to health centers to do so.
