Since BB was closed in 2001, the issue has recurred at regular intervals in various demonstrations.

Four years ago, for example, an exhibition was given about childbirth experiences along road E10 between Kiruna and the nearest BB in Gällivare.

The fear of road births was to some extent the theme this time as well and one of the organizers has his own experiences.

"I got a shock"

Marie Rahkola believes that the statistics on how many children are born on the roads, in ambulances, taxis or their own car, are seriously misleading.

- I was shocked when I read that my child was born in the ambulance.

The child came in the car, the ambulance was not even there, she says.

She was told that it is where the placenta comes out that counts as the place of birth.

Want maternity care in the new hospital

About 50 people gathered on Kupoltorget in Kiruna for the demonstration and several prams were parked.

The question of a BB in Kiruna may be relevant in connection with the question of what Kiruna's new hospital should contain.

Among the Kiruna residents in the square, the perception was unanimous.

- We can not see a new hospital without maternity care and emergency surgery, says the organizer Lina Maria Viitala.
