Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, said during his announcement of the Global Alliance for Tolerance, yesterday, that the alliance is one of the strongest initiatives adopted by the UAE to achieve peaceful coexistence among human beings, and to realize the importance of the values ​​of tolerance and human brotherhood, and to combat ignorance, intolerance and discrimination, noting that The summit embraces spreading this powerful message to the world.

He stressed that the UAE is keen to convey its humanitarian message, which is based on tolerance, peace, and peaceful coexistence to the whole world, and that it will spare no effort with all its determination to preserve human brotherhood and raise the banner of peace.

The Global Alliance for Tolerance was launched on the sidelines of a major extraordinary summit for interfaith dialogue, which was held in the presence of prominent religious leaders in the Italian pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai.

Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan stressed that the World Summit for Interfaith Dialogue is part of the UAE's celebration of the International Day for Tolerance and the festival organized by the ministry in order to consolidate the values ​​of dialogue, coexistence and openness to the other.

He pointed out that spreading tolerance requires great effort and cooperation, and a commitment by all governmental and civil organizations and organizations, as it is a necessity to enrich human lives, preserve their dignity, and achieve peace and stability for all.

He explained that the Global Alliance for Tolerance will take human brotherhood as a basis for its work, and will spare no effort to consolidate freedom of belief, respect for religions, and the rule of law. Develop a vision for ways to finance his activities, and choose a name for him.

For his part, the High Representative of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations, Miguel Angel Moratinos, said that this is an exceptional summit by all standards, as unlike the usual establishment of military alliances, he announces from the heart of the "Dubai Expo" a humanitarian alliance among civilizations, in the presence of religious leaders, which It represents a strong message that establishes the value of peaceful coexistence and acceptance of the other.

He added that "this alliance is an important step forward, and the United Nations will work with it side by side to achieve its goals, in light of facing many challenges and a rise in the index of hate crimes, discrimination and racism."

He stated that the "Covid-19" pandemic showed a negative aspect inherent in many societies, such as fear of the other, racism and factionalism, so the summit participants must find solutions to reduce these manifestations, provide the necessary protection for minorities, combat terrorism, and protect women and vulnerable groups.

He pointed out that "the index of attacks on places of worship increased in 2020, and the index decreased relatively in 2021, until the recent political change occurred in Afghanistan, so the attacks were repeated again, so the importance of the World Summit for Tolerance and the announced alliance emerges."

He stressed that the summit is consistent with the "Expo Dubai," noting that "it represents an oasis for gathering hearts and convergence of ideas, and therefore we hope for the success of the endeavors to spread tolerance and human brotherhood."

The Undersecretary of the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, Dr. Muhammad Al-Duwaini, said, "The UAE was able to make tolerance a tangible value, through real and serious initiatives, represented in the Tolerance Document signed in 2019, the adoption of a national program for tolerance, and the creation of a ministry for this purpose.

This is not surprising for a country that embraces dozens of nationalities in amicable, peace and respect for the law, and each of them is aware of its limits and responsibilities.

Al-Duwaini added that "all religions entrench the values ​​of tolerance and love, but the reality is witnessing unfortunate events that prove that many in the world lack security and peace," stressing that "talking about tolerance, although preserved and repeated, is a necessity for the stability of nations and peoples."

The Apostolic Vicar in Southern Arabia, Archbishop Paul Hender, stressed the importance of the Global Alliance for Tolerance in consolidating the values ​​of peace and coexistence, noting the experience of the UAE in this regard.

Historic meeting

The UAE dedicated 2019 to tolerance, and that year witnessed the historic meeting between the Chairman of the Muslim Council of Elders, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, His Eminence Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, and His Holiness, Pope Francis, in Abu Dhabi, and a “Human Fraternity Document” for world peace and coexistence was issued by him. .
