• Covid Three out of four travelers have used public transport in Madrid again after the pandemic

The map of the Madrid Metro will grow another

40.5 kilometers until 2028

.

This is the forecast with which they work in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, where they specify that since they are highly complex works, the calendar could undergo modifications.

The extensions programmed in the suburban facilities affect

lines 3, 5, 10 and 11

and have an estimated investment of

more than 2,000 million euros

. In total, seven new stations will be built and improvement work will be carried out on existing ones.

«Public transport is the best instrument for territorial structuring and, therefore, for social cohesion because it allows the citizens of 179 municipalities, many far from the capital, to link, bring, unite, narrow and open the doors to a transport network very powerful that opens the possibility of accessing many public services, to have many work, educational and leisure opportunities ", emphasizes the counselor of the branch,

David Pérez

, about the importance of extensions.

The map of the Madrid Metro today includes 302 stations and 294 kilometers of tracks, the fifth largest network in the world behind London, New York, Shanghai and Paris.

If the calendar is fulfilled in detail, within seven years it will have

309 stations and 334 kilometers of roads

.

Line 3

The first works that will begin to be carried out will be the connection of the

Villaverde Alto

station

, on Line 3, with

El Casar (Getafe)

, on the 12. The 2.5-kilometer tunnel that will connect both stops will begin to be drilled in the first quarter of 2022 and if there are no unforeseen events in

December 2023,

trains will be able to circulate through it.

The works, currently in the bidding phase, have a budget of

92.3 million euros

.

The objective of this expansion is to provide a new alternative to the metropolitan area of the city of Madrid for residents of the municipalities linked through the circular MetroSur route, which can now only be accessed through Puerta del Sur, on the Line 10.

In addition, the actions will include the reform of the El Casar station to connect it with the Cercanías and the construction of a surface deterrent car park with

500 spaces

.

The urban and interurban bus lines will also be reorganized to, among other things, improve connectivity with the expansion to the east of Getafe, linked to the urban development of Los Molinos, which is in full evolution.

Line 11

The next expansion set in the calendar will be the first of the stretches of Line 11, which will run between

Plaza Elíptica and Conde Casal

, on

Line

6, where an interchange will be made. In this case, the works will begin in November 2022, will end in the

fourth quarter of 2026

and will involve the creation of 7.5 kilometers of new roads with a budget of 558 and two new stations: one in the Comillas neighborhood and the other in Madrid Río in the inner zone of the M-30.

Subsequently, the other three sections will be executed that will make this line a diagonal - with a total budget of 1,634 million euros - that will connect the southwest with the northeast of the region:

Cuatro Vientos-La Fortuna

, whose works will begin the third quarter of 2024 and will end in the third quarter of 2026; that of

Conde de Casal-Mar de Cristal

, of "great technical complexity"; and that of

Mar de Cristal-Valdebebas

. These last two will be held simultaneously between December 2024 and the second quarter of 2027.

In total, the three actions will add more than 17 kilometers of Metro surface and two brand new stops in the area near the Isabel Zendal Nurse Hospital:

Ciudad de la Justicia

and

Valdebebas Norte

, which will also be an interchange.

The new route will also pass through the existing Madrid subway station in T4, at one end of Line 8, which will facilitate a new, more direct connection from the Adolfo Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport with Atocha.

Line 5

Simultaneously with the creation of this new great mobility axis, Line 5 will be expanded to link

Alameda de Osuna

with

T1, T2 and T3

.

It is the shortest route planned, with 1.5 kilometers of tunnels, and a cost that is estimated to be around 75 million euros.

If there are no imponderables, the works should be executed between the third quarter of 2023 and

January 2026

.

When they are completed, they will provide new access between the airport and one of the busiest lines on the subway.

The process is in the adjudication phase of the drafting of the informative study.

Finally, the map of the extensions will be completed by the extension of Line 10 to cover residents and workers who will go daily to the

Madrid Nuevo Norte

offices

when the last major urban development in the capital is a reality. Here the deadlines that are managed for the work of the operators range from the fourth quarter of 2024 to the third of

2028

.

When this extension of three additional kilometers of tunnels has been completed, there will be three more open stations

-Centro de Negocios, Fuencarral Sur and Fuencarral Norte-

located at a distance of less than 1,000 meters from each other.

In parallel, an interchange will be built next to the Chamartín subway stop with 37 bus docks and a deterrent parking for around 400 cars.

This project is awaiting a

bilateral agreement

that is expected to be signed before the end of the year between the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure and Madrid Nuevo Norte.

The commitment is that the private promoters of development make a "voluntary contribution" of 141 million euros to co-finance the 290 that the work will cost.
