November 15, 2021 With Italy having just 33.8 square meters of urban green per inhabitant, it is strategic to focus on a large urban redevelopment plan for parks and gardens that improves the quality of the air and life of the population, giving a boost to economy and employment. This is what emerges from an analysis by Coldiretti on Istat data in reference to the latest 2021 Report on air quality in Europe, published by the AEA, the European Environment Agency, where it appears that Italy is in first place among the EU states for the number of deaths from nitrogen dioxide (NO2, 10,640 deaths) and is the second after Germany for the risks from fine particulate matter PM2.5 (49,900 deaths) and ozone (3,170).

Air pollution which is considered by 47% of Italians to be the first environmental emergency according to the Coldiretti / Ixè survey and therefore it is necessary to intervene in a structural way by rethinking the development of cities and favoring the spread of public and private green areas with the most suitable for the climatic and environmental conditions of the individual territories. The goal - specifies Coldiretti - is to create real smog-eating oases in cities where you can breathe a clean area thanks to the choice of the most effective trees in capturing greenhouse gases and blocking dangerous fine dust. What causes smog in cities - continues Coldiretti - is the combined effect of climate change, traffic and the reduced availability of green spaces with the situation worsening in metropolises where the values range from 15.2 square meters in Messina to 17.1 in Rome, from 17.8 in Milan to 22.2 in Florence, from 42 , 4 of Venice to 9.2 of Bari, according to Istat.

In this context, over 300 thousand new trees, almost 8 million additional square meters of parks and gardens, 16 thousand new terraces and balconies in bloom in the next three years thanks to the extension of the green bonus provided for by the budget maneuver that places Italy at the forefront of fight against smog and climate change. An objective in line with the national strategies of the PNRR where - underlines Coldiretti - 330 million euros have been allocated for urban forestry that allow for the planting of 6.6 million trees through the protection of existing green areas and the creation of new ones. also in order to preserve and enhance biodiversity and ecological processes linked to the full functionality of ecosystems. The bonus - reminds Coldiretti - provides for a deduction for Irpef purposes in the amount of 36% of the costs incurred for the green arrangement of private and condominium uncovered areas of existing buildings, of real estate units, appurtenances or fences (gardens, terraces), for the construction of irrigation systems, wells, green roofs and hanging gardens. A structural intervention that favors the spread of public and private green areas in the cities, considering that - concludes Coldiretti - an adult plant is capable of capturing 100 to 250 grams of fine dust from the air and a hectare of plants is capable of capturing 20 thousand kg of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.terraces), for the construction of irrigation systems, wells, green roofs and hanging gardens.
