Russian mobilization near Ukraine's borders has created new fears of attacks.

Moscow has dismissed all such allegations and denounced the military activity of NATO countries near Russia's borders in the Baltics, the Black Sea and the Balkans.

"We must be clear-sighted and realistic about the challenges we face, and what we see is a significant Russian military build-up," Stoltenberg told a news conference in Brussels with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, Reuters reports.

Stoltenberg stated that he does not want to speculate on Russia's intentions, but added:

- We see unusually large troop contractions, and we know that Russia has previously been prepared to use its military capabilities to carry out hostile acts against Ukraine.

100,000 soldiers

According to previous information, Russia has mobilized about 100,000 soldiers near Ukraine's borders in recent weeks.

Stoltenberg criticizes this because he believes that it will reduce the warning time if Russia decides to "carry out an aggressive military action against Ukraine".

According to information to SVT from the Swedish Defense Research Agency, FOI, the Russian mobilization is unusually large for this time of year.

At the same time, the United States is clearly signaling that it delivered about 80 tons of ammunition on Sunday, according to a statement from the US Embassy in Kiev.

In addition to this, both Russian and American strategic bombers with capacity for nuclear weapons have recently conducted flights in the region.

Macron contacted Putin

French President Emmanuel Macron spoke by telephone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Monday, Reuters reports.

Macron's message to Moscow was clear: France is ready to defend Ukraine's territorial integrity.

Britain also repeated on Monday its pronounced military support to Ukraine if Russia attacks.

This spring's mobilization

This spring, Russia carried out a similar mobilization with over 100,000 soldiers near Ukraine's borders.

Russia later said it was withdrawing troops, but said there were reports of weapons being released in the region.

The annexation

In March 2014, the chairman of Ukraine's National Security Council stated that Russia had gathered close to 100,000 troops at the border with Ukraine.

This happened shortly after Russia's illegal annexation of the Crimean peninsula.
