Burkina Faso: three days of national mourning after the attack in Inata

In Inata, a detachment of gendarmes was attacked.

At least 28 of them were killed along with 4 civilians.

A national mourning of 3 days was decreed from this Tuesday, November 16 at midnight after the attack on a gendarmerie detachment on Sunday in Inata in the Soum.

According to a latest assessment revised upwards Monday evening, at least 28 gendarmes and 4 civilians died.

In a statement, the government confirmed at least 32 dead in

Sunday's attack

. The toll could rise further, as searches continue to find survivors, according to a security source. Sunday, November 14, 27 gendarmes were found unharmed, the government said.

According to local sources, Inata's gendarmerie detachment comprised between 100 and 150 men.

Sunday's attack was carried out by " 

a large number of armed individuals

 " circulating " 

on board several pick-ups and motorcycles,

 " said a security source, who spoke of long exchanges of fire between the attackers and the gendarmes.

This attack against the Burkinabè defense and security forces is one of the deadliest in the country, which has been facing jihadist attacks for 6 years.

An attack killed at least 20 people in Inata in northern Burkina Faso.
