5 boys injured in US school shooting

Five boys were wounded in a shooting that took place near a high school in the US state of Colorado, police said.

Police in Aurora, Colorado, said that after receiving reports, they went to a park near Central High School, where they found five people aged between 14 and 17 were shot and wounded.

"The suspect is unidentified and has left the scene," the police added on Twitter, noting that "a total of five people were taken to hospital."

She explained that "the incident did not take place inside the school, but rather to the north of it, in Nom Park."

After a year in which teaching was mostly limited to distance learning, American schools resumed face-to-face education, which raised fears of shootings inside educational institutions, and several small-scale incidents have been recorded in recent weeks.

According to data collected by the Washington Post, more than 256,000 students have been subjected to armed violence in American schools since 13 people were killed in a massacre at Columbine High School in Colorado in 1999.

This number includes those who were caught in the violence by witnesses or people who were forced to evacuate educational institutions due to shootings.

In 2018, 29 shootings were recorded in schools, while 23 such shootings were recorded in 2019.

And the school shooting that killed the most in recent years dates back to 2018, when 17 people were killed by a former student who opened fire at a high school in Parkland, Florida.
