• Migration crisis Turks who have done business with migrants destined for Belarus: visa and flight for 1,500 euros

The situation on

Poland's border with Belarus

is increasingly tense. The Polish government has asked NATO for help after a group of about 50 migrants broke the barbed wire from the Belarusian side and entered Poland near the village of Starzyna, Polish police said on Sunday. The raid occurred on Saturday shortly before five in the afternoon and at least 22 Iraqi citizens were subsequently detained. In total, there were 223 attempts to enter in a single day, according to the same sources.

Poland is debating with Lithuania and Latvia to request the convocation

of the NATO Council

to demand "concrete measures" to resolve the migration crisis on the Belarusian border, the Polish prime minister said on Sunday.

Mateusz Morawiecki

recalled that Poland, Lithuania and Latvia can request consultations under article 4 of the Alliance treaty.

According to this section, any ally may request a meeting whenever, in the opinion of one of them, their territorial integrity, political independence or security is threatened.

Since last Monday, thousands of irregular immigrants from countries in the Middle East and Africa have tried to cross the border between Belarus and Poland.

Minsk now says it has sent around 2,000 migrants back to their countries as part of efforts to stop this illegal immigration, the Belarusian foreign minister said. Vladimir Makei also said that Belarus had revoked the permission to invite foreign workers from around 30 travel agencies, according to RIA Novosti. Syrian airline Cham Wings has suspended its flights to Minsk due to this migration crisis, it announced on Twitter.

Lithuania, Latvia and Poland have been denouncing for months an avalanche of illegal crossings from Belarus and accuse Minsk of orchestrating a migration crisis to destabilize the European Union in retaliation for the sanctions and for the support of these countries to the Belarusian dissent. The Polish leader told reporters that EU leaders would discuss

further sanctions against Belarus

, including the complete closure of the border or at least the blocking of rail traffic.

The NGO Grupa Granica has received information about attempts by Belarus to force migrants to use violence against Polish forces.

In total,

Poland has concentrated 15,000 soldiers near the border with Belarus

to stop the entry of illegal migrants into its territory.

A Polish soldier died on Saturday in an accident on the border with Belarus, reported the command of the 17th Mechanized Brigade of the Polish Army.

According to preliminary data, the cause of death was a random shot from his weapon.

PUTIN WANTS TO HELP

British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss blamed Moscow for what she called "a shameful artificially created migrant crisis."

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is willing to facilitate as much as possible the solution of the migration crisis at the border, but that he has nothing to do with what happened.

The Russian leader now claims to have learned from the media about what is happening on the Belarusian-Polish border.

According to his account, he did not broach the matter with his Belarusian counterpart, Alexander Lukashenko, until very recently.

"I have already said that we have absolutely nothing to do," Putin reiterated in statements released by the Russian agency Sputnik.

Those who claim otherwise "simply want to make the righteous pay for sinners," said the Russian leader.

The British Foreign Minister urged the European Union to revoke the permits granted for the

Nord Stream 2

gas pipeline

, arguing that this project would allow Russia to strengthen control over the countries that depend on its hydrocarbons and condition European energy security.

The EU High Representative for Foreign Policy,

Josep Borrell

, and the Belarusian Foreign Minister discussed this migration crisis by phone on Sunday.

Vladimir Makei insisted on the Belarusian position: "The uselessness of sanctions and how counterproductive they are for the development of relations between Belarus and the EU."

Poland, Latvia and Lithuania have asked the EU to finance the construction of walls on the borders they share with Belarus.

Borrell believes that the barriers will not solve the migratory flow.

"Now in Europe there are more walls than in the time of the Berlin wall. But the problems of immigrants will not be solved with their help," Borrell said in an interview with the television channel France 24.
