Hackers hack the FBI email

Hackers infiltrated an FBI email system on Saturday and sent tens of thousands of messages warning of a possible cyber attack, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and security specialists said.

The FBI said in a statement that the fake emails appeared to come from a legitimate FBI email address.

Although the devices affected were "quickly shut down when the problem was discovered," the FBI said, "This is an ongoing situation."

The Spamhouse Project, which tracks threats on its Twitter account, said hackers sent tens of thousands of messages warning of a possible cyber attack.

It was reported by Bloomberg. On Saturday, hackers broke into the FBI's external email system, the US government said.

The FBI later said it was "aware of the incident this morning, which involved fake emails sent from an FBI email account."

"This is an ongoing situation and we cannot provide any additional information at this time," the office added in a statement.

The FBI has multiple email systems in place, and the system that was hacked Saturday appears to be a public one that agents and employees can use to send email to the general public, according to Austin Berglas, head of professional services at cybersecurity firm BlueVoyant.
