The work environment at the birth in Västerbotten has been criticized during the year.

There have been alarms about high workload, too little staff and no time for recovery.

The Midwives' Association believes that this has caused many midwives to quit.

- Before the summer, 18 had resigned.

Between the thumb and forefinger, 10 have resigned after the summer.

It is as if all employees at the birth in Skellefteå were to resign, says Erika Häggblad, the Midwives' Association's county chairman.

The region: The figure is lower

According to Region Västerbotten, the figure is significantly lower.

The region believes that there are 17 midwives who have left or will leave this year.

Of these, 13 are so-called redemptive midwives.

Erika Häggblad says that the figures look different because the union also includes people on leave and hourly employees in that figure.

They simply count differently, but that 17 midwives is also too high a figure.

- You should look at why people choose to resign from the world's best job.

It's the work environment, she says.

Closed for Christmas for three weeks

The staffing situation has been particularly tough at BB in Lycksele.

This summer, they were forced to stay closed for several weeks due to the lack of staff.

In early November, the region announced that BB in Lycksele will be closed for three weeks during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

The women who will give birth will instead be referred to the births in Skellefteå or Umeå.
