The large number of shootings linked to gang crime has continued during the year, despite some police successes.

With the help of encrypted services such as Sky and Encrochat, more than 500 people have been arrested.

Despite this, gang violence has remained at a high level.

This is because the gang criminals who are arrested are quickly replaced by others, says Johan Olsson, head of the police's national operational department, in Ekot's Saturday interview.

- We have a good view of these environments and individuals, but we do not break the trend.

When we arrested many in a short time, we were able to push down the violence for a short time, but unfortunately that respite became short, especially in metropolitan areas, he tells the radio.

He describes the police's work as "treating the symptoms" - and believes that the whole community must be mobilized to access the new recruitment to the gangs.

- Others need the same as we have received: More resources, new legislation and new methods.

Wants to listen without suspicion

More police, more resources and more tools - that is what is required for the police to be able to fight gang violence, says Jonas Olsson.

One of the tools that the police have requested is that they want to be able to intercept gang criminals without there being a concrete criminal suspicion.

The government recently decided to investigate such legislation.

The proposal has also been criticized for allowing for more arbitrary interception.

Johan Olsson emphasizes in the interview that it should be assessed by courts, but that the police can make a demarcation.

- This legislation must be investigated by others, but basically we are interested in eavesdropping on people who are deeply involved in organized crime, we have very concrete information that distinguishes them from other people, he says.
