The 27-year-old political scientist Franziska Brandmann from Grevenbroich was elected as the new federal chairman of the Young Liberals in Erlangen on Saturday.

At the federal congress of the FDP youth organization she received 182 of the 197 votes and thus a result of 92 percent.

Brandmann had no opponent.

She succeeds the FDP member of the Bundestag Jens Teutrine, who no longer stood for election.

In her application speech, Brandmann had made demands on her own party for its participation in the federal government.

The party must not lose its liberal, free face.

It has to make a difference if the FDP is part of the coalition, she said.

There is an urgent need for a reform to support students, which must include a parent-independent student loan.

"We will accompany the FDP constructively and critically over the next few weeks, months and years and advocate liberal principles and convictions within the FDP," said Brandmann.

The youth organization is well aware that government participation will also force the FDP to make compromises.

“But you mustn't lose yourself in this,” emphasized Brandmann.

"We must and will remind them of that."
