Winter is a good time to catch a cold.

For this reason, we must reinforce, more than at any other time of the year, certain guidelines that will help us prevent colds.

From washing our hands frequently and being careful with cold and humidity, to quitting smoking and avoiding smoky environments or eating a diet rich in vitamins and minerals.

It all adds up.

With the cold comes also a cough: a mechanism, usually reflex, that makes it possible to expel excess mucus and irritants from the respiratory tract.

Of all the symptoms of colds, coughing is possibly one of the most annoying, since it can make it difficult for us to do our daily activities.

The cough can be dry (or non-productive) or productive.

The first is due to irritation of the throat, which causes a tickling sensation, and does not produce phlegm or mucus.

The second causes phlegm that helps clear the airways of irritants.

This cough, in particular, should not be suppressed, but quite the opposite: it must be facilitated so that the body can expel secretions.

Another symptom that usually appears when we get a cold is nasal congestion, which occurs when the tissues that line the nose swell due to inflammation of the blood vessels.

In other words: our noses get clogged.

Inflammation of the lining of the nose creates an obstruction that causes difficulty in breathing through the nostrils.

Nasal congestion may or may not be accompanied by a runny or runny nose.

The cold is also usually accompanied by an itchy throat, constant sneezing, and mild or moderate discomfort and tiredness.

Its incubation lasts from 48h to 72h and the cold itself usually lasts between seven and 10 days and, although it is a can, it normally turns around without complications.

Keys to coping with the cold

In addition to the treatments and medications that will act directly on the symptoms of our cold (after consulting with a health professional), there are other small gestures that will help us to improve our discomfort. First of all, we must drink a lot of fluids. No less important is getting as much rest as possible. It is also advisable to gargle with hot water with lemon and honey. Finally, taking nasal aspirations of water with salt or eucalyptus fumes will help us to calm the symptoms of the cold. Even more so if we use VapoRub, through inhalations or applied to the chest, neck or back. If we choose the first option, it will be enough to add a tablespoon of VapoRub in a container with hot water (not boiling) and inhale the vapors for 10-15 minutes. In case of topical use,We will have to perform a gentle massage on the chest, neck and back, and repeat the application up to three times a day. During use, it is recommended to wear loose comfortable clothing to facilitate the inhalation of the vapors.

Camphor, eucalyptus, oil of turpentine and thymol, ingredients of VapoRub, are rubefacient: they cause an increase in local blood flow that improves the evaporation of essential oils.

Turpentine oil and thymol have antiseptic properties.

Menthol and eucalyptus provide a feeling of nasal decongestion.

Camphor, menthol, and thymol suppress coughs.

The action of the active ingredients in VapoRub takes place mainly by inhaling the medicinal vapors it releases, which pass through the respiratory tract.

The active principles exert their effect on the nasal mucosa.

In addition to acting locally, they can be absorbed from all routes of administration and, once absorbed, spread widely throughout the body.
