November 12, 202111 years in prison. This is the sentence for the American journalist Danny Fenster decided by the military court of Myanmar. The 37-year-old reporter is the editor-in-chief of Frontier Myanmar, a local news magazine, and is the only foreign journalist to have been accused by the military authorities. 



Fenster was indicted on three counts: inciting dissent, illegal association, violation of immigration law. In separate proceedings, he is also charged with terrorism and sedition and faces life imprisonment.



Fenster was arrested on May 24, almost four months after the military coup against former leader Aung San Suu Kyi, at Yangon International Airport as he tried to leave the country.



The confirmation of the sentence comes from the Twitter of the newspaper for which he writes.

"We are deeply disappointed with today's decision to convict Danny Fenster."



Danny is also facing two additional charges, under the Counter-Terrorism Law and section 124 (a) of the Penal Code, that will be heard separately.

He is one of dozens of local journalists who were detained after a military coup in February. According to Frontier, Fenster had previously worked for Myanmar Now, an independent news site that has been critical of the military. "The allegations were all based on the allegation that he was working for a banned media Myanmar Now. Danny resigned from Myanmar Now in July 2020 and joined Frontier the following month, thus at the time of his arrest in May 2021. he had worked with Frontier for more than nine months, "the news site said.
