The criminal court of Dax (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) on Monday sentenced a duck breeder to ten months suspended prison sentence.

A ban on exercising a professional activity related to animals for five years was also pronounced, reports France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

In August 2020, a video filmed by the L214 association in one of its farms in Lichos (Pyrénées-Atlantiques) denounced animal abuse.

A breeder "completely overwhelmed by the situation"

Ducklings, for example, lived among the corpses of their congeners.

At the hearing, the man admitted the facts, explaining that he "found himself completely overwhelmed by the situation".

"There were financial problems, a breeder who was bloodless and who did not know how to sound the alarm bells at the right time," said the lawyer of the respondent.

Since then, the defendant has lost all of his five farms.

Through the voice of its lawyer, the L214 association indicated that it saw in the judgment an “important” decision because it was “dissuasive”.

Me Hélène Thouy spoke of animals "considered as simple objects, simple resources and simple means".

For its part, the breeder's council regretted a sentence "a little difficult" given the repercussions already suffered by the man.
