A 60-year-old Australian escaped from a huge crocodile

by repeatedly stabbing him with a razor in the head

as the reptile tried to drag him into a river, local authorities said Wednesday.

After surviving the attack on a remote river on Australia's Cape York peninsula,

the wounded man drove his car to hospital,

the Queensland state department of the environment said.

The man had gone fishing last week at his property near Hope Vale, about a five-hour drive from the city of Cairns, and chased a bull off the shore to take his place.

It was then that the crocodile attacked.

"He explained that he

saw the crocodile seconds before it lunged at him,

rolling him over as he was about to throw his fishing pole," the statement continued.

The man first tried to grab onto a mangrove branch to prevent the crocodile, with its jaws around its boots, from carrying him into the river.

"The man said that when he got into the water, he managed to get the knife out of his belt and

stabbed the crocodile in the head

until he released it," he said.

The man managed to get to his car and drive to the local hospital.

He was later transferred to Cairns hospital, where he continues to recover a week later.

Environmental agents who questioned him confirmed that the injuries were consistent with a crocodile attack.

However,

they will not try to capture the reptile because the area is so remote.

In his opinion, the animal was attracted by the presence of the bull.

The number of marine crocodiles has

skyrocketed since they were declared a protected species in 1971

, although recent attacks have reignited the debate over population control.

This species, which

can grow up to seven meters

and weigh more than a ton, are common in the tropical north of the country.

The attacks of these reptiles are frequent there, although they are rarely fatal.
