Faced with nuisances, the city of Stockholm will halve the number of these electric vehicles in circulation, via a mandatory police authorization decided on Monday by the city council.
Scheduled to come into force on January 1, the measure, voted in the evening by the majority combining environmentalists and the right, is also accompanied by a reduction from eight to three in the number of authorized rental companies.
The total number of self-service scooters will thus drop from 23,000 to 12,000 maximum, with a ceiling of 4,000 units per rental company maximum.
Three rental companies will be able to stay on the market
The three rental companies who will keep the right to operate scooters, whose names will be announced "in the coming weeks", will be those who have posed the least problems so far, on the basis of objective criteria, said a door - speech of the elected ecologists of Stockholm. Among the players present on the Stockholm market are currently the companies Bolt, Lime, Voi, Bird and Tier.
As in Oslo and Copenhagen, the excesses linked to the success of these scooters (accidents, unauthorized parking, etc.) have prompted Stockholm city officials to supervise their practice.
Copenhagen banned electric scooters entirely in October 2020, before reintroducing them under strict conditions last month.
In July, the city of Oslo had for its part implemented a series of restrictions, including a cap on their number at 8,000 (against 20,000 until then) and the ban on their use between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. .
