Elm death has spread throughout the country and killed many elms for a long period of years.

It is the elm splinter borer that lives in the trees and passes on the fungal spores which is a cause of elm death, or via the roots of trees that are close to each other.

Morgan Johansson is a tree caretaker and one of those who has now been commissioned to cut down diseased trees.

- This disease has almost killed every single elm, it has not been possible to stop so it is very serious, says Morgan Johansson.

Planting new trees

The work of cutting down the trees will continue throughout the week.

Ljungby municipality will plant other trees where the elms have stood.

Some examples of varieties to be planted are cascade willow, silver willow, Turkish oak, mountain cherry and ornamental cherry.

It is Mathias Thuen, park manager at the municipality who is responsible for making it green again where the elms stood.

- At old squares we will plant three large trees such as Hungarian oak, quercus frainetto and marsh.

Diversity of species and large specimens are now added during November, says Mathias Thuen.

Morgan Johansson thinks that the sight of all the dead elms is sad.

- It is very serious, but it has been going on for so many years, so now there are probably hardly any elms left.
