The restart of the economy after the pandemic closures has led to shortages and rising prices for many raw materials, including natural gas.

Russia, which is the largest supplier of natural gas, has also restricted deliveries to Europe and supplies less gas than before the pandemic.

This has led to prices skyrocketing, at the turn of the year liquefied natural gas (LNG) cost around 20 euros per MWh, now the price is around 80 euros.

The sharp price increase means that it is twice as expensive to run the new Vasa ferry today, compared with when it was delivered to the shipping company just over two months ago.

- When we ordered the ferry, LNG was the absolute cheapest alternative, the price increase has taken us all to bed, says Peter Ståhlberg, CEO of Wasaline.
