Higher speeds, clearer rules for conversions and a holistic approach to the A-tractors in Sweden.

This is the ambition for the new regulations that are being developed for Sweden's A-tractors.

The government has commissioned the Swedish Transport Agency to analyze the issue and the rules may enter into force as early as next year.

The background is more and more accidents where A-tractors are involved and a strong pressure from the public that something must be done.

Traffic police: "Easily manipulated today"

Among other things, the current speed limit of 30 kilometers per hour will be reviewed - and the possibility of making it difficult to manipulate the speed limit.

Today you can sit several people inside the cab, only the person driving has a clear view.

Are new rules needed?

- Yes I think so.

Most take care of themselves but we have a problem with the A-tractors and that is that they are very easy to manipulate.

This means that many 15-year-olds already drive around in cars today and this is something that parents do not always know about, says Mats Lundmark, traffic manager at the police in Piteå.

Just want to see two people per vehicle

He believes that a big problem is also that the young people take an AM card to drive a moped and then get into an A-tractor that weighs several tons.

- They also have no experience and it is not so easy for them all the time, says Mats Lundmark who also welcomes belt requirements and that you should only be allowed to sit two people in the A-tractor.

Today, an A-tractor can be driven by people who have reached the age of 15, and who have an AM driving license class 1. In Piteå alone, there are over 500 A-tractors registered.

In Sweden, there are just over 36,000 A-tractors, an increase of about 27 percent in just one year.
