[Explanation] Recently, a rhino-shaped "Minister Rhinoceros" is very popular in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, USA. Its nickname "Reina" is the museum's call for votes from around the world.

The San Francisco Asian Art Museum not only has this kind of bronze cultural relics from the late Shang Dynasty in China, but also has a collection of nearly 20,000 Asian cultural relics spanning six thousand years of history.

[Explanation] Xu Jie, director of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, pointed out in an exclusive interview with China News Agency "Ask East and West" that to allow culture to break through the limitations of politics is to find the greatest common divisor.

He believes that the key lies in "communication" and "relation."

It is necessary to find an entry point familiar to Western audiences and lead them into an unfamiliar culture.

Our most important concept is communication and connection.

Then this communication and connection exist in three aspects. One aspect is the connection between ancient and contemporary, which is a connection between ancient art and contemporary art.

The other is the relationship between Asia and the world, exploring the status and role of Asia in the world.

The third is the connection between art and life, which is especially important.

It means that all our exhibitions, including the terracotta warriors and horses exhibitions from far away China, must be related to our American life here today.

[Explanation] In 1983, Xu Jie served as the secretary to the director of the Shanghai Museum.

After that, he went to study in the United States and worked in American museums.

In 2008, Xu Jie became the first Chinese curator of a major American museum.

His unique work experience gave him a deeper understanding of the operation of Chinese and Western museums.

The strength of China (museum) lies in its team, and the United States (museum) emphasizes the individual.

It is often a comprehensive museum (in the United States). It is impossible to have many employees in every cultural category, because one person has to take care of all aspects.

I think this is a big difference between Chinese and American museums.

It has great advantages, and you have many opportunities to develop your (talents) when you are alone.

Of course it has challenges. How do you do it well? It is very important to cooperate with experts outside the museum, whether they are Chinese experts or Chinese art experts in other parts of the United States.

[Explanation] In Xu Jie's view, there are many differences and differences between different countries, nations and cultures.

In cross-cultural communication, museums play an important role.

The coverage of our museum (Asian Art Museum of San Francisco) covers the whole of Asia, but among all this cultural fields, China's collection is the strongest.

Serving our audience with Asian traditional and contemporary culture and art, enhancing audiences’ understanding and appreciation of Asian art and culture, and promoting communication and recognition between everyone’s creativity, interest, and culture.
